Course Summary
There's motherhood, apple pie, ...and the SEI Introduction to CMMI.
The classic, three-day Intro to CMMI course is authorized by the SEI (Software Engineering Institute) and serves as a thorough introduction to the world's leading model for the development of software-intensive systems: the CMMI (Capability Maturity Model Integration).
Focusing on the latest version of the SEI CMMI for Development (CMMI-DEV, v1.2), the class also provides the basic foundation needed to take the one-day SEI Services Supplement for CMMI. Both courses can only be delivered by an authorized instructor affiliated with the SEI or an SEI Partner organization.
Class Materials
- CMMI Second Edition: Guidelines for Process Integration and Product Improvement
- Student notebook of SEI CMMI training slides and exercises
- Upon successful completion, an official SEI certificate (needed to serve on most CMMI-DEV appraisal teams)
- Only when we teach it: Our proprietary bonus slides, optional lunchtime jam sessions, CMMI wall chart, CMMI reference card
Who Should Attend
- Anyone involved in CMMI-based process improvement initiatives (e.g., members of Engineering Process Groups)
- Candidate appraisal team members
- People wanting to take other SEI courses for which this is a pre-requisite (e.g., SEI Services Supplement for CMMI)
- Anyone else interested in learning more about the CMMI.
What You'll Learn
By the end of the course, you should be able to:
- Describe the components of the CMMI (goals, practices, required vs. expected components, etc.) and how they work together
- Discuss each of the 22 process areas in the model
- Know where to find information in the model, whether you're involved in a process improvement initiative or on an appraisal team.

Agenda
Everybody who teaches the Intro to CMMI is required to present the exact same SEI slides in the exact same order. We sprinkle our own proprietary bonus slides throughout the standard SEI CMMI training material - to clarify concepts, illustrate examples, and add some much-needed humor.
Our optional lunchtime jam sessions allow us to dive into popular topics that the course itself doesn't cover in detail.
Day 1
Understanding the CMMI framework
- Introduction
- Process Improvement Concepts and CMMI
What Questions Have You Brought to Class?
Optional lunchtime jam session
- Overview of CMMI Model Components
- Model Representations and Institutionalization
Evening: brief homework assignment
Day 2
Diving into the technical content of the model -- the Process Areas
- Product Development 1
Requirements Development (RD), Requirements Management (REQM)
- Managing the Project
Project Planning (PP), Project Monitoring and Control (PMC), Risk Management (RSKM), Supplier Agreement Management (SAM)
CMMI Appraisals: Tips from the Trenches
Optional lunchtime jam session
- Project and Organizational Support
Configuration Management (CM), Process and Product Quality Assurance (PPQA), Measurement and Analysis (MA), Decision Analysis and Resolution (DAR), Causal Analysis and Resolution (CAR)
- Product Development 2
Technical Solution (TS), Product Integration (PI), Verification (VER), Validation (VAL)
Evening: brief homework assignment
Day 3
Finishing our discussion of the 22 Process Areas, and pondering the question "Now what?"
- Improvement Infrastructure
Organizational Process Focus (OPF), Organizational Process Definition (OPD), Integrated Project Management (IPM), Organizational Innovation and Deployment (OID), Organizational Training (OT)
CMMI for Services: The "Other" CMMI
optional lunchtime jam session
